Campbell, Joseph
(1879-1944)
   Born in County Down, Ireland, he was educated at St. Malachi's College, Belfast, and worked for his father before becoming a teacher of English. In 1904 he helped found the Ulster Literary Theatre; his own play, Little Cowherd of Slainge, was performed in 1905. Before the First World War he lived in London, where he was secretary of the Irish Literary Society. During the Easter Rising (1916) he served as an intelligence officer and was later interned for seventeen months during the Irish Civil War (1922-1923). In 1925 he set up the School of Irish Studies at Fordham University, New York. From 1939 until his death he lived in Glencree, County Wicklow. He wrote as Seosamh Mac Cathmhaoil (also Seosamh MacCathmhaoil). His poems were set to music by Arnold Bax and Ivor Gurney. Some of his poetry publications: Songs of Uladh, 1904. Some of his poems: "Butterfly in the Fields," "Go, Ploughman, Plough," "The Blind Man at the Fair," "The Hills of Cualann."
